I had the wonderful privilege of photographing gorgeous baby, Annie in my Bibra Lake Studio recently. Her parents were happy for me to choose some different props and colours for her session. I’d recently added to my prop collection so this was an exciting opportunity to photograph some new items. Annie was a perfect newborn photography model and it was so lovely to work with her and her beautiful parents.
Annie was a whole eight days old for her session. 5-14 days of age is usually the best time for newborn photography. At that age newborns are usually still quite easy to settle to sleep and still squishy and easy to pose comfortably from having only left the womb recently. To make sure we don’t miss this window, I recommend booking in your session as early as your second trimester. We can pencil in a flexible session date about a week after your baby is due. I’m careful to only schedule a couple of sessions a week to make sure there’s space to re-schedule for my booked clients.
If they’re not too sleep-deprived to string a sentence together, I love chatting with parents about their sweet babies and their early parenthood experience. Annie’s mum and dad were so completely besotted with her- I loved hearing their stories. Annie’s lovely mother is a fellow midwife and water-birther so we even got to “talk shop” about her birthing experience. Hanging out with parents while they’re still wondrously processing how much their world has shifted with the new life they’ve welcomed is a big perk of newborn photography. It’s such a special time to meet a family.
For Annie’s session we started with some unwrapped photos. We then moved on to some wrapped photos in props and concluded with some sweet family photos with mum and dad. I do have a workflow that I try to follow to help things run smoothly and keep your little one comfortable. However, it’s always adaptable to suit your little one and how they’re feeling on the day. Once little Annie settled and had a nap, I was able to keep to my usual workflow. We photographed a variety of wrapped and unwrapped poses for her parents.
