Maternity Photoshoot at the Old Fremantle Power Station

Isn’t it funny how you can live in a city your whole life and not know about so many interesting places that are practically on your doorstep? This maternity photoshoot was taken near the old, deserted power station in North Coogee. It’s a gorgeous, little spot for some interesting photos and I had no idea it even existed until a friend mentioned it to me last year. She showed me some photos she’d taken there and I knew I HAD to see it for myself! I dragged my kids there one day after school to scout it out (do not recommend doing this in windy, cool weather), decided it was amazing and organised a model call with gorgeous Jasmine to do a maternity photoshoot there as soon as I could.

First, some safety/practicality information. For this session, we parked south of the power station and walked over. It’s a bit of a walk to get to this spot and it’s not exactly a lovely stroll along the beach. Yes, you can walk along the beach for most of the way, but there’s a bit of squeezing through slightly prickly vegetation, too. You can also approach from the north and have less bushwhacking- it’s just a longer walk that way. There is some broken glass around in some areas, so probably best to bring your thongs along. There’s also some prickly grass in parts and some jagged rocks. Oh, and the lake looks lovely, but probably best to stay out of it… If you have young, adventurers taking part in your maternity photoshoot, it may be best to choose a different location.

Ok, on to the actual session. Jasmine wore a Purity Lace Design red lace kimono from my client closet with a crown and hat (also from my collection). The white version of this kimono is also in my client closet and they’re perfect for beach sessions as well as lifestyle-type indoor images. I am always adding to my client closet, so if you’re looking for a particular style for your beach session, let me know. If I don’t have anything that floats your boat, we can look at purchasing something new for your session.

We started the session just outside the power station where there’s a very pretty lake. There are patches of short and long grass in the area as well as some rocks for posing against. Once we’d had enough we moved over to the old bridge. Graffiti and crumbling masonry made for an urban-style backdrop. We already had so much variety and hadn’t even taken any classic “beach photos” yet.

We climbed up to where the old bridge is for some ocean views. The sprinkling of yellow rocks amongst the grey sand and vegetation added some extra interest to these photos. And the cloudy sunset added some gorgeous, moody atmosphere. Feeling like we’d achieved something for the afternoon, we headed back to the carpark…

And stopped along the way for a quick wade into the icy water (completely voluntary on Jasmine’s part, I swear!). The kimono got a christening in the Indian Ocean and Jasmine got some more beautiful photos to celebrate her pregnancy.
